Cardiff Outdoor Group is primarily a walking group. We have a programme of walks with something to suit everyone.
Walks – mountains, coast and beyond
Walks are organised each weekend – usually on a Sunday. We also arrange weekend trips away and sometimes longer holidays. These are usually based in youth hostels, camping or backpacking. Details of our current programme can be found on our Programme page and you can also find contact details for walk or event leaders there.
If you are interested in joining the group then you are very welcome to come along to three walks or events before paying any membership fees. Just come along or if you require more details contact the walk/event leader. As a COG member you will be entitled to receive discounts in certain local outdoor stores, see Join us page for further details.
Our walks usually have a meet point at Chapter Arts Centre in Canton (at the main entrance at the front of the building). This allows us to arrange car sharing so that those without their own transport can join the walks, and reduces our environmental impact.
We try to arrange to car share from Chapter and the suggested rate to cover petrol costs is 24p per mile for each car. We also try to have one walk on each 2 month programme which is accessible by public transport, often taking advantage of train or bus routes to allow a linear walk.
Whether you prefer mountain scenery or coastal strolls and whatever your walking level, you should find something to suit you. A brief description of each walk, mileage and level of difficulty, details of the meet point and contact details for the leader can be found on our programme.
More than just walking
Evening events are held each week and vary from evening walks, Tai Chi tasters, social evenings, talks on subjects of interest to our members, quiz nights or theatre trips. Full details, including meet points, times and contact details for the event leader can be found on our programme.
We also have regular group weekends away – either staying at youth hostels or backpacking. The residential weekends require booking some time in advance and details of future trips will appear on the programme several months before the event. You must be a paid-up member of COG to join a weekend away.
We are always looking for new leaders for walks or evening activities and events. If you might be interested in putting something on the programme then please contact the programme secretaries on firstname.lastname@example.org. They will be very pleased to hear from you and can offer support and information about leading.
You can find the walk leader’s guidelines on our resources page. If you are new to leading then we can arrange for an experienced leader to accompany your first walk or help you out with maps and recce partners.
A generic risk assessment must be read and approved by the event leader for all events. If you would like to bring children and/or young people (under the age of 18) or dogs, please check first with the event organiser to ensure you are able to join the walk/event – Thank you!
